T’AWEEZ & TALISMAN

Updated: Feb 6, 2023

Wearing T'aweez/Amulet & Talisman allow or not?

Talismans :- An object thought to have magic power and to bring good luck. Amulets/Tama'im: - T’aweez

1- Ibn Mas'ood (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard Allah's Messenger (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) saying: "Ar-Ruqa, At-Tama'im (TAAWEEZ) and At-Tiwalah are all acts of Shirk (polytheism),”  (Musnad Ahmad; Abu Dawud)

2- Ahmad reported the tradition of Ruwaifi' (May Allah be pleased with him) who said that Allah's Messenger (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said to him: O Ruwaifi', it may be that you will live a longer time after me, so inform people that whoever ties a knot in his beard, places any string or cord around the neck (T'aweez etc.) or cleans himself (after toilet) with animal dung or bone, then Muhammad (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) has disowned him (has nothing to do with him)."(NISAI 5070)

3- Sa'id bin Jubair said: "Whoever cut an amulet (T’aweez) or talisman from anyone, it would be equal to liberating a slave.”

4- Narrated Abu Bashir Al-Ansari (May Allah be pleased with him):He was in the company of Allah's Messenger (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) on one of his journeys, Allah's Messenger (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) sent a messenger ordering:  "There shall not remain any necklace of bowstring or any other kind of necklace round the necks of camels except it is cut off' (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

5- It was Waki', who recorded it and he reported from Ibrahim Nakh'i that they used to dislike every type of amulets and talismans whether that contained the verses of Qur'an or anything else, [They were the companions of Abdullah bin Mas'ood (May Allah be pleased with him)]

6- Abdullah bin Ukaim narrated the following Marfu’ Hadith: "Whoever uses, attaches or wears a talisman to himself, will have that talisman put in charge of him" (Ahmad & Tirmidhee)

7- Uqbah bin Aamir (May Allah be pleased with him) narrated that Prophet Muhammad (May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said:

"Whoever wears talisman or an amulet would never see his wish fulfilled by Allah. And whoever hangs a sea shell would never get peace and rest." [This Hadith was recorded by Ahmad (bin Hanbal) (May Allah be pleased with him) with a good chain of narrators.]

8. It was narrated from Zaynab the wife of ‘Abdallah ibn Mas’ood from ‘Abdallah that he said: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say, ‘Spells (ruqyah), amulets and love-charms are shirk.” I said, “Why do you say this? By Allah, my eye was weeping with a discharge and I kept going so and so, the Jew, who did a spell for me. When he did the spell, it calmed down.” ‘Abd-Allah said: “That was just the work of the Shaytaan who was picking it with his hand, and when (the Jew) uttered the spell, he stopped. All you needed to do was to say as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: ‘Adhhib il-ba’s Rabb al-naas ishfi anta al-Shaafi laa shifaa’a illa shifaa’uka shifaa’an laa yughaadiru saqaman (Remove the harm, O Rabb of mankind, and heal, You are the Healer. There is no healing but Your healing, a healing which leaves no disease behind.’”(DAWUD 3883)

Allah the Almighty said: "Say: Tell me then, the things that you invoke besides Allah, -if Allah intended some harm for me, could they remove His harm, or if He (Allah) intended some mercy for me, could they withhold His Mercy? Say: Sufficient for me is Allah; in Him those who trust (i.e. believers) must put their trust." (Qur'an 39:38)

"Most of them believe in Allah and still practice Shirk (polytheism)."(Qur'an 12: 106)

Whoever obeys the Messenger, he indeed obeys Allah, and whoever turns back, so We have not sent you as a keeper over them. (Qur'an 4:80)

"And whoever contradicts and opposes the Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) after the right path has been shown clearly to him, and follows other than the believers’ way, We shall keep him in the path he has chosen, and burn him in Hell — what an evil destination!” [An-Nisa’ 4:115]

And Allah knows best.
